This month we get to know Matthew “JR” Herzig – Senior Product Specialist!
How long have you been with Rig Source?
Officially been back for two years now. Originally, I was hired in July 2013 on the Rig Source / Terramac team as the Terramac Product Specialist.
What is your hometown? (City & State)
Beaver Falls, NY. A small town of about 600 people. Not Beaver Falls Pennsylvania where Joe Namath is from!
What do you like most about the drilling industry?
Most drillers will help you learn processes when onsite. I did not come from the drilling industry so learning more daily.
Who inspires you?
Nobody specific but anyone that is willing to learn daily and improve themselves is an inspiration and helps me keep focus to do the same.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter the drilling industry?
It’s not easy work so be prepared to work hard, listen, and learn from the experience in the industry so that knowledge can be passed on.
What’s one thing–either industry-related or not–that you learned in the last month?
Using just anyone to do windows in your house is a complete rip-off! Fortunately, I have a good friend who does it for a living. The markup in that industry is insane.
What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
Good question as I’m kind of a boring person! The wife and I have been fostering cats for a local shelter that we adopted our 4 cats from since early 2024.
What’s the last book you read?
The Bible. Otherwise, it is typically an install / technical manual. I really don’t read books as with young kids it’s hard to sit for hours and concentrate!
What is your favorite hobby?
Used to be weightlifting and needs to become that again! Otherwise riding 4-wheelers and shooting and grilling / smoking on one of the numerous Weber grills at the house.
What’s the first concert you ever attended?
It would have been Bluegrass concerts with Uncle Stu and Aunt Donna in Northern NY as a kid. They used to take us to large festivals in the 80’s.
What’s the next place on your travel bucket list?
Probably to my where my wife’s family is from in Mola Di Bari, Italy and then to Bern Switzerland where my family emigrated from in the 1800’s. I do get to travel to some cool places for work so I’m kind of lucky there.
If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A large Tomahawk steak medium rare and reverse seared, garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus, corn on the cob, and a good garden salad with Italian dressing.
What’s one item you can’t live without?
Probably my tools and Weber grills. I make money with one and good food with the others!
